1,600 Portland families
to benefit from mass distribution of food
PORTLAND — An estimated 1,600 families will be helped this summer thanks to a partnership between The Salvation Army and Feed The Children’s Americans Feeding Americans project.
On Wednesday, July 27, four semi-trucks full of food boxes, hygiene and household products will arrive at the Regal Lloyd Center Stadium 10 Cinema parking lot, 1510 N.E. Multnomah Blvd., where Salvation Army staff and more than 100 volunteers will hand out one of each type of box to 1,600 of Portland’s less-fortunate families. These boxes will be distributed to those who show up between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and present a voucher.
Families who meet the requirements for food assistance can pick up a voucher between now and July 19 at any of four Salvation Army corps in the Portland metro area A voucher must be presented to receive food, hygiene, and household products. Then, on July 27, families can bring the vouchers to the Regal Lloyd Center Stadium 10 Cinema parking lot, where Lloyd Center is permitting The Salvation Army to stage this mass distribution.
The pre-packaged boxes will contain canned foods and other non-perishable items, household products such as paper towels and toilet paper, hygiene items like soap and deodorant, household cleaners, and Avon products. Staff and more than 100 volunteers will be on site throughout the course of the day unloading boxes and helping families to their cars. Families will need to provide their own means of transportation to and from the distribution site and a way to carry the three boxes.
More than 100 volunteers will be needed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with volunteer shifts lasting between two and three hours. As some of the boxes will be filled with food, it is likely that the boxes will weigh more than 25 pounds each, so several individuals are needed with the ability to lift 25 pounds or more during their shift. To volunteer, contact Rhona Brant at 503-794-3245
For vouchers, contact any of the following Salvation Army corps: 5325 N. Williams Ave., Portland (503-493-3925, ext. 25); 1712 N.E. Sandy Blvd., Portland (503-239-1267); 473 S.E. 194th Ave., Gresham (503-661-2704) or 351 S.E. Oak St., Hillsboro (503-640-4311).
This distribution is the latest stop on Feed The Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 100,000 families across the country in cities affected by the nation’s economic downturn.
