Sunday before election set for prayer, fasting
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The National Day of Prayer Task Force has issued a clarion call to prayer on behalf of this month’s national election. The Pray for Election Day! campaign asks Christians to set aside Nov. 5, the Sunday before the general election, as a day of prayer and fasting.
“Throughout Scripture, we see that God answers prayer and He cares about the health of nations,” National Day of Prayer Vice Chairman Jim Weidmann said. “The Pray for Election Day! campaign is an effort to remind people of faith of the importance of praying for those in leadership. We are simply asking people to fast and pray on the Sunday before the elections for God’s guidance in the election process and that He would place men and women of integrity into positions of influence.
“Then, it is extremely important to go to the polls on November 7 and cast their vote. Every vote counts and we are blessed to live under a representative government that allows us to choose our leaders. By casting our votes, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to place candidates into office, who share our beliefs on important issues.”
In conjunction with Pray for Election Day!, the task force is offering an Adopt-A-Leader kit.
Adopt-A-Leader consists of 12 greeting cards, 12 calendar stickers, a refrigerator magnet and a postcard. The kit was designed for individual or group use. Many Bible study groups, Sunday school classes and Christian schools have adopted local, state and federal leaders.
“Paul tells us in I Timothy 2 that we should pray for ‘everyone — kings and all of those in authority,’ ’’ said Weidmann. “There are millions of Christians in this nation and we have a representative government. It only makes sense that we should pray that the Lord place godly individuals into those positions to represent us. We want as many people praying for the elections as possible. Without the millions of people helping us at the local level, it would be impossible for us to call this nation to prayer.”
